Electron Microscopy Datasets

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota has generated several volumetric electron microscopy datasets, each up to terabytes in size. These datasets are used by institutions across Minnesota, including the University of Minnesota Twin Cities, the University of Minnesota Duluth, and the Hormel Institute in Austin, Minnesota. Mayo wanted to set up a cyberinfrastructure to handle data delivery and analyses of these datasets. A private cloud solution is used to synchronize datasets during acquisition to a server hosted at MSI backed by a highly scalable object storage. Datasets are immediately available for processing and distribution to other clients.

The acquisition and development of the cyberinfrastructure for data delivery and analysis of the electron microscopy datasets was funded through an Infrastructure Grant from the Minnesota Partnership for Biotechnology and Medical Genomics. UMII helped with the design and provided domain expertise and image analysis. MSI developed the cyberinfrastructure, including storage and computational resources.
