DSAI Seed Grants: CVNEURO-CORE Initiative

The CVNEURO-CORE (CerebroVascular Neuroscience, Cardiovascular, and Radiological Outcomes Research Ecosystem) initiative, led by Principal Investigator Assistant Professor Margy McCullough-Hicks (Neurology), will develop a large-scale, continuously expanding cerebrovascular research dataset that integrates clinical and radiographic data from patients treated for ischemic stroke, transient ischemic attack, intracerebral hemorrhage, and subarachnoid hemorrhage. Collaborators on the project include Associate Professor Christopher Streib (Neurology), Professor Kamakshi Lakshminarayan (Epidemiology and Community Health), Professor Lin Chen (Medicine), Professor Bharathi Jagadeesan (Neurosurgery), Professor Ramachandra Tummala (Neurosurgery), and Assistant Professor Sisi Ma (Institute for Health Informatics; MSI PI). 

Leveraging the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines (GWTG) Stroke Registry, which currently includes data from over 10,000 patients across MHealth Fairview hospitals, CVNEURO-CORE will establish a centralized, interdisciplinary platform fostering collaborative research across, but not limited to, the Departments of Neurology, Cardiology, Radiology, Neurosurgery, Epidemiology, and Health Informatics. CVNEURO-CORE will address critical gaps in existing datasets by incorporating comprehensive radiographic data, facilitating novel analyses, and reducing redundant data cleaning through streamlined processes. In centralizing real-world cerebrovascular data, CVNEURO-CORE will enable interdisciplinary investigations into topics such as stroke etiology, imaging biomarkers, and disparities in care, improving patient outcomes and supporting ongoing grant submissions. 

This project received a DSI Data Sets Seed Grant in 2024 and was featured during the Seed Grant Showcase in February 2025. The Seed Grant program promoted, catalyzed, accelerated, and advanced University of Minnesota-based data science research so that University faculty and staff are well prepared to compete for longer term external funding opportunities. 

DSI became the Data Science and AI Hub (DSAI) in June 2025. The DSAI Seed Grant program is currently paused and they are not accepting proposals. More information can be found on the Seed Grant website.
